LET'S TALK GRAPHIC DESIGN - EPISODE 2
HOW DO WE GET INSPIRED?
I find creativity has a real ebb and flow to it, I also believe if you aren’t initially excited by the project you’re working on and the client you’re working with then it’s really hard to be motivated and inspired when creating the design.
In order to get inspired and stay inspired I believe a good place to start is by really targeting and focusing on work that you want to produce and that really resonates with you. You also want to try and target clients who are open to a collaborative approach and are willing and understanding of your procedures and processes. If you're excited by a project and you're working with good people it's going to make it easy from the beginning to be motivated especially in those times when you can get stuck for ideas!
WHERE DO WE DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
You can get ideas and inspiration from lot's of different places. Some good design resources include Behance. I love Behance, it’s a worldwide platform or portfolio of creative arts across all different skill sets from Graphic Design, Illustration, Digital Design etc. It’s a really good place to find examples of other works from across the globe so there is a broad scope of styles and approaches, you are bound to find something that will be of good use for inspiration.
I personally also love to draw inspiration from bigger agencies whose work I admire. I try to aim for the same quality and scope of work that they present, obviously their capabilities are larger due to the number of people, their reputation and clients they work with but it’s always good to look up to people who are doing the kind of work that you want to be doing and modelling from them as much as possible.
It's also a great idea to look outside of your usual skill set and environment to see what you can find. Inspiration doesn't just have to come from other designs it can come from talking to different people, exploring new places, researching other industries than you're designing for and seeing what kind of things they're doing. This will help to spark new and interesting ideas.
